Who handles septic permits where you live?

Septic permits in Ontario are issued by one of three kinds of offices: your municipal building department, a public health unit, or a conservation authority. Pick your municipality and see who reviews Part 8 applications there.

Requirements, forms and fees change. Confirm with the office before filing — and if your municipality is not listed yet, call your municipal building department first: if a health unit or conservation authority handles septic there, they will point you to it. We are adding municipalities continuously.
Municipal building department

Most of southern and central Ontario, including all of Simcoe County and Muskoka. The same office that issues your house permits reviews Part 8 sewage systems.

Public health unit

Several districts delegate septic review to the health unit — for example Algoma Public Health in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

Conservation authority

Some watersheds run Part 8 programs on behalf of municipalities — for example the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority, and the Ottawa Septic System Office operated by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.
